Student Assistantship

Each semester a group of students assist in:

The circulation area: by

  1. Checking the borrower’s ID to make sure that the person is currently enrolled at HU.
  2. Lending, renewing and returning books according to set rules.
  3. Shelving books and periodicals.
  4. Assisting borrowers to find books.
Shelf-reading:

Some students help in shelf-reading. They check for misplaced books and put them back in order where they belong.

Typing book labels:

A few students help in the processing of books and periodicals by typing labels and cards whenever needed.

In addition to the above mentioned duties, students may lend a hand in preparing periodicals for binding purposes, repairing books and making yearly inventory of catalogued items.

As a student assistant you have to bear the following in mind:
  1. Coming on time is of utmost importance as the circulation desk should not be left unattended.
  2. Only library staff and student assistants who are on duty are allowed behind the circulation desk.
  3. The hours you are on duty are meant entirely for work. If there is no work, you are permitted to study.
  4. In case you will be absent from work, notify one of the library staff beforehand and state your reason.
  5. Avoid group studying or long private conversations with your friends.
  6. You are not allowed to reserve or borrow books for other students.
  7. Check the borrower’s ID no. in the computer to make sure that the person is currently enrolled at HU. Then follow the standard lending procedure.
  8. Alumni and non-Haigazian borrowers should be referred to the librarian
