The Haigazian University Dance Club, supported by the HU Student Life, took the stage with 60 dancers on May 26 and 27, 2013, at the USJ AbouKhater Theatre.
Comprising the largest club in terms of numbers at Haigazian, the dance club has been continuously presenting solid performances for eight consecutive years and this year was no different. Sixty students and four coaches worked tirelessly and with incredible commitment for eight months to turn their dream into a reality.
Project manager, supervisor and director, Peggy Bedoyan, in her opening speech, explained that while it never gets any easier, it is so much more than just a dance show to them. She invited the audience to watch the students’ stories come to life on stage.
Bursting with energy, the show was a joy to watch from start to finish and an inspiration to all. Spreading the simple yet poignant message that what you wish for really can come true, the titular theme “I wish” was carried throughout the performances without detracting from the beauty and creativity of the individual dances. Including such culturally diverse songs as Chinese, Indian, Armenian and Lebanese, as well as both classical and modern and the ever-popular Latin dances, Steps 6 allowed the students to showcase their passion in a wide variety of routines.
One especially moving performance was the opening dance, performed in memory of the loved ones of a few of the dancers. Beautiful and expressive, it offered a message of hope.
The program also included a couple of video presentations near the beginning and end of the show. The first was a behind-the-scenes look at the effort and the memories created by the students over the past year, and the latter included a message from Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian, the president of the university, who praised the students for their commitment and expressed his own wish for Haigazian, and indeed the whole world, to always move forward, step by step.
The 90 minute show was designed, constructed, directed and performed by Haigazian University students and dancers. Credit is due to Peggy Bedoyan, Stephanie Rashid, assistant manager and club chairperson, and the dedicated coaches and choreographers, ElieYounes, ShaheDemirdjian, SarineKrikorian and Sara AbouShaaban, as well as all the wonderful dancers.
“Steps 6 – I wish” is a projection of its dancers’ commitment, dedication, desire and perseverance. It’s the story of their wishes; the projection of their focus on what’s positive and constructive in life, their choice of expression and art, over the negative representations of their generation.
