On Tuesday March 11, 2014, the Haigazian University Press launched the Armenian Evangelical Schools Principal, Dr. Zaven Messerlian’s book “Armenian Participation in the Lebanese Legislative Elections 1934-2009” at the Haigazian University Auditorium, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Culture of Nagorno-Karabagh, Mr. Lernik Hovhannissian, Lebanese MP Mr. Shant Chinchinian, the Chief Technical Adviser for the UNDP Lebanese Elections Assistance Program, Mr. Richard Chambers, University President, Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian, and fellow faculty members, students and guests.
In his welcoming address, Director of the Armenian Diaspora Research Center at Haigazian Universityr, Dr. Antranik Dakessian, stated that Haigazian University Press takes pride in having this book published as it is a significant addition to its series of unique publications. Dr. Dakessian added that the importance of this book lies in the fact that Dr. Messerlian narrates the electoral process within the social Armenian context and the political framework of Lebanon, providing a historic overview of the Lebanese Armenian community in its introductory chapters.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Arda Ekmekji, introduced the keynote speaker of the event, Mr. Richard Chambers, who stated that Dr. Messerlian’s book enabled him to access the details of Armenian participation in the legislative elections, in turn helped him compare the past with the present, highlighting the improvements and the developments of the mindset and the role of the Armenians in the elections, especially in the Metn constituency.
Following Mr. Richard Chambers, the audience enjoyed the soothing sounds of Yetvart Aprahamian’s Prelude No 19 on the piano, performed by Mr. Arek Daghlian, a former student of Dr. Messerlian.
In his intervention, the author declared that the title of his book, “Armenian Participation in the Lebanese Legislative Elections 1934-2009”, is the title of his Master’s Degree completed in 1963, at the American University of Beirut. Though Messerlian’s thesis had highlighted the period of elections till the year 1960, at the Haigazian University’s Armenological Review’s editorial board’s request, Messerlian continued the research and extended it to the present times. At the end of his speech, Dr. Messerlian thanked his supervisors at AUB, the Haigazian University Press, and all those who contributed to the light of his vision.
In conclusion, President Haidostian congratulated Dr. Messerlian for the work done over so many years with academic passion and interest in detail. He further noted that the book resembles a window with a panoramic view, covering a widespread spectrum historically and politically. He also thanked Dr. Dakessian for the thorough work in preparation for the publication, Chirak Printing and Publishing for their professionalism, and the guest speaker, Mr. Richard Chambers for his kind participation.
