Beirut, 10/06/2010 – With funding from USAID, Mercy Corps in collaboration with local partners Youth Association of the Blind and Lebanese Physically Handicapped Union, Haigazian University was one of the ten chosen organizations to participate in a “Towards Inclusive Development” program designed to increase the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Lebanon’s social and economic development.
The project started in January 2009 and following a series of workshops dedicated to raise awareness on disability and inclusion, as well as to increase the development of institutions’ capacities to become inclusive organizations, Haigazian University agreed to train Miss Joumana Hamoush, who has a physical disability, as an Assistant in the Library under the supervision of the Librarian Miss Sonia Sislian.
Also, within the scope of the program, five ramps facilitating the access of persons of disabilities to the ground level across the University Campus were installed, through the generous support of USAID & Mercy Corps.
The project’s final session took place on May 26, 2010 at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beirut where Haigazian University was presented with an award of appreciation for its participation in the program. Representing Haigazian University, the HR Coordinator Miss Salpi Jalian thanked the organizers of the Program and stated the University’s commitment “to maintain HU as an institution which respects and promotes the rights of Persons with Disabilities and stands as an advocate for their full participation in society”.
