University Student Assistance Program (USAP) is a project funded by the USAID. Its purpose is to offer 65 public school students with financial need from throughout Lebanon the opportunity to attend a prestigious private university in Beirut, Haigazian University, on a full scholarship.
To recruit students, USAP visited schools across all 26 districts of Lebanon, to introduce the program to principals and municipalities and to encourage students who meet the requirements to apply to this program through in-class presentations. In addition, brochures and posters about the program were mailed out to the schools and distributed to prospective students. The total number of applications so far is 354 from nearly all 26 districts of Lebanon.
To assess applicants, USAP will administer a TOEFL test, a short interview with students and a written test evaluating leadership and communication skills. A total of 300 students were invited to sit for TOEFL exam of which around 180 are estimated to be interviewed and take the written test.
We are currently extending the recruitment deadline in five districts: Koura, Bint Jbeil, Jbeil, Jezzine and Bcharre where we have received a smaller number of applicants through radio advertisement, reaching out to local organizations and municipalities for collaboration.
As the assessment process comes to an end by mid August 2011, Haigazian University will select 65 outstanding students gender balanced and geographically distributed. These students will have the chance to reap the benefits of higher education at Haigaizian University. The students will be encouraged to join student clubs and be active in student life at the University to develop their leadership and communication skills.
