Armenian Rug Ornaments Project in the Lebanese Armenian Schools

In collaboration with the Hovhannes Sharambeyan Folk Arts Museum in the Republic of Armenia, Haigazian University facilitated the Armenian Rug Ornaments Project funded by the Boghossian and Tufenkian Foundations.

Between 6 and 14 April, 2022, Ms. Gayane Aslanyan, the deputy director of Yerevan’s Hovhannes Sharambeyan Museum of Folk Arts, and carpet weaver Ms. Anna Manoukyan, visited 14 Lebanese Armenian schools and had two-hour workshops with over 500 students.

With the purpose of connecting the Lebanese-Armenian youth to the art of the Armenian rug and channel them through to Armenian culture, students were introduced to the history of the Armenian rug. They were given paints to color an Armenian rug ornament that was etched on a 20×20 cm flat wood, which they took home.

The workshops also included photos of getting the wool from the sheep, transforming it into cord and spinning it, coloring it and eventually weaving the set design.
