The Dangers of Dieting and Eating Disorders

On Tuesday the 13th of February, 2018, the Nutrition Department at Haigazian University organized a lecture entitled, “the Dangers of Dieting and Eating Disorders”, which was delivered by Ms. Huguette Abou Khalil, the Awareness Campaign Director at the Middle East Eating Disorders Association (MEEDA).

During the one-hour interactive presentation, students, staff and faculty members attentively listened to timely issues of great concern to the youth, such as dieting, body image and eating disorders. Abou Khalil shared with the audience the various environmental factors that lead to eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, orthorexia, etc …), and proposed some solutions for treatment.

Abou Khalil went further to discuss the tremendous effect the media has on influencing the youth and their perception of beauty and body image, through featuring videos and photos where photoshop and special effects are used to present perfect pictures and images.

Founded in 2009, the Middle East Eating Disorders Association (MEEDA) is an NGO dedicated to raising awareness on the deadliest of all mental health conditions, as well as provides guidance and support to the Lebanese community on the dangers of dieting. It offers the most evidence-based ways to reducing risks of developing heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, high blood pressure and many more disorders associated with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, overweight and obesity.
