Half a century after the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War, retired General Fadl Daher of the Internal Security Forces returned to Haigazian University to share poignant reflections with the HU community. Drawing from his tenure as head of police in the Mina El Hosn district during the critical early years of the war (1975–mid-1976), General Daher highlighted the vital role the University played in promoting social responsibility and providing support during one of the nation’s darkest chapters.
In his talk to a group of students, faculty and staff, General Daher expressed deep appreciation to Haigazian University, with special recognition for its Founding President, Dr. John Markarian, and his wife Inge. He recalled their bold decision to offer the space now known as the Student Lounge, along with adjacent offices, as a temporary base for the Mina El Hosn police force during the tumultuous years of 1975 and 1976.
With sincere admiration, he recounted the University’s humanitarian initiatives, including providing shelter for displaced individuals and organizing educational and cultural programs aimed at engaging and uplifting the children and youth. He also commended the community’s tireless fundraising efforts, which were instrumental in delivering aid to those in need.
As part of his presentation, General Daher displayed archival ISF documents and daily reports from that period, offering a rare glimpse into the challenges faced and the resilience shown by both security forces and the University community.
