Lebanese President Joseph Aoun Receives a Delegation of Haigazian University on the Occasion of its 70th Anniversary

On the momentous occasion of Haigazian University’s 70th anniversary, a distinguished delegation from the University, headed by its President, Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian, paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, at the Presidential Palace in Baabda.

In his opening remarks, Rev. Dr. Haidostian expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Aoun for his gracious reception of the delegation, noting the profound significance of the visit in light of the University’s seven-decade legacy. “It is a deep honor to be received by Your Excellency as we mark the Platinum Jubilee of Haigazian University—seventy years of educational mission and national service,” he stated.

Tracing the University’s origins to 1940, and its official establishment in 1955, Dr. Haidostian reflected on its transformation from a modest institution into a prominent national university situated in the heart of Beirut. “Haigazian stands today as a beacon of faith, academic integrity, and civic purpose—nurtured by the generous support of those who believe in its vision,” he affirmed.

Highlighting the University’s unique ability to harmonize heritage with innovation, Dr. Haidostian recalled Haigazian’s instrumental role in pioneering the famed Cedar Rocket project of 1961—a symbol of Lebanese scientific ambition. He praised the institution’s enduring spirit of partnership, particularly its historic academic ties with the United States, and elaborated on the University’s present-day offerings, including advanced Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, research endeavors, and initiatives in sustainable education.

The visiting delegation comprised members of the Board of Trustees, senior faculty and administration, and student representatives, in addition to the particular presence of Mrs. Stephanie Stein Landes, the granddaughter of one of Haigazian University’s visionary founders, Mr. Stephan Philibosian and her spouse Michael Landes, from the USA. Dr. Haidostian emphasized the University’s unwavering commitment to Lebanon’s most vital asset: its youth. “Even at a time when hope may seem elusive, we are steadfast in our dedication to empowering young Lebanese,” he stated. “We firmly believe that the future of this nation is a collective responsibility. Under your leadership, Mr. President—and with the support of both government and society—we remain confident in our shared ability to contribute to the building of a stable, just, and enlightened Lebanon.”

Dr. Haidostian concluded by reiterating Haigazian’s dedication to its educational mission and national responsibility: “Together, with each meaningful step forward, we edge closer to a horizon of renewed hope. We stand beside you, Mr. President, in your noble pursuit of national renewal and remain steadfast in our commitment to building a Lebanon worthy of its aspirations.”

President Aoun’s Remarks

President Joseph Aoun warmly welcomed the delegation, extending his congratulations to Haigazian University on reaching its Platinum Jubilee. “The most profound investment any nation can make is the investment in its people,” he declared, underscoring his enduring belief in Lebanon’s potential as embodied by its generations of graduates, educators, and thinkers.

He praised the widespread influence of the Lebanese diaspora, remarking, “From Brazil to Australia, one rarely encounters a major enterprise without the involvement or imprint of Lebanese talent. This international presence represents an invaluable asset for our nation.”

Turning to Lebanon’s domestic context, the President stressed the imperative of safeguarding political, economic, and security stability to ensure that Lebanon’s youth may remain rooted in their homeland and build productive futures. He lauded Lebanese universities for their resilience and tenacity in preserving the integrity of the educational sector. “Thanks to the dedication of our academic institutions and their unyielding faith in our shared values, education continues to be Lebanon’s most enduring treasure,” he affirmed.

Addressing the broader challenges facing the nation, President Aoun emphasized the necessity of restoring trust—both between the Lebanese people and their government, and between Lebanon and the international community, particularly the Arab world. “We have already embarked on this vital journey,” he stated. “It is our collective responsibility to create the conditions for renewed confidence, which in turn will open new opportunities for our youth and encourage those abroad to return and contribute to national life.”

He concluded by reaffirming his administration’s determination to navigate the nation through its current challenges. “The path to recovery has begun with the formation of the government and the revitalization of our institutions. Our will is firm, our vision is clear, and despite all obstacles, we shall persevere.”
