Haigazian University proudly secured First Place in the Robotics Category of the Fourth National Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Competition (NRC4-AI), held at the Lebanese University – Fanar Campus. This victory highlights the Computer Science Department’s commitment to technological innovation, academic excellence, and hands-on student learning.
To celebrate this remarkable achievement, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the NRC4-AI Organizing Committee visited Haigazian University to officially present the First Place Trophy and Certificate of Excellence during a special ceremony attended by faculty members, staff, and students.
In his speech, Mr. Shant Estepan shared the inspiring story of how the project began in a Logic Design class as a simple mobile-controlled prototype and, through months of hard work, evolved into a sophisticated AI-powered smart car. He emphasized how this achievement reflects the department’s strong focus on hands-on innovation, critical thinking, and preparing students to tackle real-world challenges in robotics and artificial intelligence.
Following Mr. Estepan’s remarks, Boghos Sherbetjian spoke about his personal journey in developing ELLIPSER, highlighting the challenges he faced, the skills he gained, and the innovative features of the project. He explained how the car uses AI-based line following, object detection, and collision avoidance algorithms to navigate complex environments. Boghos also demonstrated how ELLIPSER integrates sensor data processing and adaptive behavior, showcasing its ability to intelligently adjust speed and direction in real time. His engaging live demonstration of the smart car’s capabilities earned enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Representing the NRC4-AI committee, Dr. Wassim Jaber commended both the technical excellence of the ELLIPSER project and the academic quality of the Computer Science Department at Haigazian University. He expressed his enthusiasm for future collaborations between the committee and Haigazian to further promote innovation and excellence in the fields of robotics and AI across Lebanon.
Congratulations to Boghos Sherbetjian and the entire Computer Science Department for this remarkable achievement that brings pride to Haigazian University!
