Haigazian University solemnly marked the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with a series of commemorative events held in April, organized by the university’s Heritage Club. Through dialogue, remembrance, and cultural expression, the university community paid tribute to the 1.5 million victims of the genocide, while reaffirming its commitment to historical truth and the preservation of Armenian identity.
On April 22, the commemoration began with an insightful and reflective conversation featuring Haigazian University President Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian. In a discussion moderated by Heritage Club member Serouj Kouyoumjian, Dr. Haidostian reflected on the intertwined narratives of the Armenian Genocide and Haigazian University’s 70-year legacy. He highlighted the university’s namesake, Armenag Haigazian—a scholar and victim of the genocide—and emphasized the vision of the institution’s founders in establishing a center of higher learning within the Armenian Diaspora. He also spoke on the vital role of Armenian youth in advocating for justice and preserving cultural identity in an ever-evolving global context.
The following day, April 23, the campus observed a moving candlelight procession, led by the Armenian Catholic Scouts’ fanfare band. Students, faculty, and staff walked silently from the university’s main courtyard to the Mugar Garden, placing white flowers beneath the symbolic “Forget Me Not” flower monument in honor of the genocide victims. The procession was complemented by an artistic and cultural program featuring traditional Armenian music, dance, poetry, and an exhibition of archival testimonies, reinforcing the power of memory as a form of resistance and resilience.
In addition to the on-campus events, Haigazian University reached a broader audience through media participation. A group of students appeared on MTV Lebanon’s primetime talk show “It’s About Time”, where student representative Araz Eleyjian spoke on behalf of the university. A short video segment featuring preparations for the commemoration provided viewers with a glimpse into the meaningful work undertaken by students to honor this historic milestone.
Haigazian University remains committed to truth, education, and the preservation of Armenian heritage, believing that through remembrance, justice and peace can be pursued for future generations.
